Picks: Worth digging deeper

Timbuctoo on Wikipedia

Wikipedia’s entry is concise, factual, and for the most part current. Beware, though, the photograph with the caption “Timbuctoo gate.” That photo shows the entrance to the private sporting club, not any entrance to the town itself.

Many thanks must go to Gayle Madwin for laying so much of the groundwork for the Timbuctoo-related pages on this site. I have contributed heavily to this site, and I’m still impressed by how much more can be done.

Timbuctoo on Historical Marker Database

Another page to which I’ve heavily contributed. However, the creator and editor has done a great job curating the page.

Timbuctoo on Atlas Obscura

Although the entry is quite clunkily written, the information is for the most part accurate. Beware the “Timbuctoo Gates” designation on the photo. The gates pictured lead to a private sporting club, not to the town itself.

Timbuctoo on Ghost Towns

While I can’t speak for the larger site in general, I can say that, although the page featuring Timbuctoo has very little information, the information it does contain is completely inaccurate. It’s almost as though the contributor were winging the entire entry based on the faulty memory of bits and pieces he’d read about or heard at some time or other.
